About Crimea Federal University:

V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University is a higher education institution located in Simferopol has a century-long history with a network of research and production facilities, which has more than 7,000 staff and over 32,000 students, including about 3,000 international students from 54 countries.

The university began its history from the Decree of the Crimean Territorial Government September 3, 1918 “On the Establishment of the Taurida University”. The opening of the Crimean Medical Institute took place on 1 April 1931.

Among the originators of Taurida University were the scholars from Kiev University. They elected the first Board headed by Rector Professor Roman Gelvig, an eminent figure in the medical science. After his death on October 13, 1920, Vladimir Vernadsky, a member of the Academy of Sciences, was elected the university’s rector.

Following the establishment of the Soviet state, the university was transformed. On February 1, 1921, it was renamed M.V. Frunze Crimean University. During the 1920s and early 1930s, the university served as a platform for setting up three higher education institutions: the teacher-training institute, the medical institute, and the agricultural institute.

The university became widely recognised due to many world-renowned researchers and scientists that studied and worked there. Among the university’s most notable alumni are academicians Dmitry Shcherbakov (1922) and Igor Kurchatov, Member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Kirill Sinelnikov (1923), Corresponding Members of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Gleb Frank (1925) and Kirill Shchyolknin (1932).

The development of new campuses of the Crimean Federal University began in August 2019.

Today, V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University comprises 42 units located across Crimea, including 11 academies and institutes and 6 colleges.

History:

The university’s history is deeply entwined with the history of Crimea. It was the tumultuous 20th century that saw the emergence of a number of powerful educational institutions in Crimea, which, in their brief period of existence, gained recognition and fame in scholarly circles, made an invaluable contribution to the development of global and national science, and produced a number of world-renowned researchers, writers, and public figures.

Today, the university carries on a variety of educational, teaching, research, and training activities which enable its students to acquire and develop a broad range of knowledge and skills in an array of fields, including science, art, humanities, medicine and many others.

V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University regularly hosts a wide range of both national and international forums, conferences, roundtables and other events.
